Jan's 2002 Marathon Adventure for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society

Last year I participated with the Virginia Chapter of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Team in Training Program to raise money for the Society by training to run in a marathon. What started out as a personal challenge to actually finish a marathon turned into an inspirational journey. While completing a marathon is a commendable goal, it is secondary; the most important reason for the Team in Training program is to raise money for research, patient services and education in order to find a cure for these diseases.

I have recently moved to Georgia and have signed up with the Atlanta chapter of Team in Training and am excited about my goal of raising at least $8,000 and completing two marathons this year. My first marathon will be June 22 in Anchorage and the second one will be October 13 in Chicago. The Atlanta chapter is huge with a great support network of LLS staff, coaches, mentors and past participants and it's wonderful to be working with them.

Leukemia and its related cancers - lymphoma, Hodgkins disease and myeloma are cancers that originate in the bone marrow and lymphatic tissues. Every 5 minutes someone in the United States learns that they have one of these diseases and every 9 minutes someone dies. In children under the age of 15 leukemia is the number one cause of death and in men under the age of 35 leukemia and lymphoma are the leading fatal cancers. These numbers are staggering, however, great strides in research have tripled the five-year survival rate for leukemia from 14% in the 60's to 44% today and the survival rates for other cancers also continue to improve as research funded by the Society often leads to treatments and cures for other types of cancers.

This year I have two personal patient heros, Kerry Joedecke and Brittany Ross. Kerry has recently undergone a bone marrow transplant and her recovery is going well. Brittany was planning to undergo a transplant, however, her marrow started to recover and she is doing well with drugs to keep her immune system working.

In addition, each team is matched up with local patients and the Anchorage team has two, Alex Strickland and Ryan Webb (pictures are on the photo page).

The daily struggles of these heros and the courage and grace that they face them with is incredible.

Please help them and others by forwarding a donation (no amount is too small or too large) along with the donor form (click on "donate" to the left) to me. All contributions are 100% tax deductible.

You can check out my diary to see how training is going as well as for other interesting information and tidbits.
